Gwen McCrae - Your Love Is Worse Than A Cold Love (Cat, 1975)
Another cut off of Gwen McCrae’s 1975 LP “Rockin’ Chair”. This is an earworm for sure. I got one more to post off of this record. By 1975 soul music had really locked into an intricate mode. One very general rule of Baroque counterpoint is when one voice rests or holds, another voice moves, the resultant an elaborate arrangement where every note and rhythm is represented but not stepping on the toes of the other parts. Funk music brought that to soul music. Listen to how the horn stabs interact with the bass line and then with the strings and drums. Everything in its right place. -Ricky
