Dee Dee Warwick - It’s Not Fair (Mercury, 1969)
Woke up with this song in my head. It wouldn’t be the first time I’ve woken up with Dee Dee’s voice in my head. Expertly arranged and performed in the big-budget uptown style. Hear a couple of other Dee Dee tracks here.

Tarheel Slim & Little Ann - It’s Too Late (Fire, 1959)
Tarheel Slim & Little Ann have this dark, condemned style that either gives you the creeps or makes you weep. Or both. It certainly makes Little Ann cry out in a sea of creepy reverb in the last leg of the tune.

Wendy Rene - Crying All By Myself
Wendy Rene has a signature deflating, descending and chromatically-slipping melismata that evokes a sort of longing desperation. Her lack of precision and control as a singer is exactly what makes your heart break as a listener. This collection shows her youth as a singer, I think, as it stylistically remains on the pop/girl group side of things and the range of ornaments and vocal chops she demonstrates is limited. I’d imagine though, that’s exactly what Stax wanted out of her, a youthful wailer who had that cute, amateur quality to her. She’s probably best known for her Stax single “After Laughter Comes Tears”, an innocent but deeply haunted tune.

The Falcons - I Can’t Help It
The Falcons were a vocal group who at different times featured such greats as Wilson Pickett and Eddie Floyd. This track kills.

Dyke & The Blazers - We Got More Soul (Original Sound, 1969)
This song is a classic. It made the top 10 R&B chart in 1969. Dyke was a part of the backing band of the O’Jays early on and went off to do his own thing later on in the 60s. They were doing their thing while JB was doing his, at the same time. Dyke was shot dead in the street in ‘71. This is also the theme song to The Soul Shack, a local KUSP radio show hosted by my man JT here in Santa Cruz.

Bobby Powell - Late In The Evening & Reprise (Live on THE !!!! BEAT)
Bobby has been killing me for the past month or two. His deeply southern sensibilities as a singer, piano player and songwriting really grab me. Here’s a live recording with an added reprise from one of his appearances on the popular R&B television show The !!!! BEAT.
